Being Thankful At Thanksgiving

Thank you. Such a simple phrase, yet so easy to forget to say.

I know that to others, I don’t appear thankful.

I’m a rather obsessive person who is almost always working on something, whether it be client work, a book, comics, or a new website I’m launching. When I’m not working, I’m trying to learn new skills – video, new art techniques, how to write better. In short, I’m never satisfied with where I’m at.

So I rarely take time to enjoy the present or even acknowledge it.

I don’t think to say thank you to the people in my life nearly enough.

It’s not that I’m not thankful, I am. In fact, I often think of how lucky I am for the various people in my life. But when you’re focused on what you don’t have (not from a material perspective, mind you), you don’t take the time to properly appreciate what you do have.

So, this post is my attempt to show some thanks to the people in my life. It’s not a complete list, and I’m sure in my rush to get this done on schedule, I’ll leave someone out and look like a big jerk.

Thank you to my wife for being the kindest person I know, for putting up with my schedule, and for being a great mother to our son. I love you more and more each day.

Thank you to my son for helping me remember what’s really important in life. And for being such a sweet, funny boy.

Thank you to my mom for my quirky, artistic personality, and for instilling kindness in my soul as a child, something I am reminded of more and more when I look at my son. Thank you for always being there and supporting my creativity and for inspiring me with your own art.

Thank you to my brother for inspiring me, though he might not realize it. And for always knowing the coolest new things.

Thank you to my mother-in-law for always being there for us and for loving our son so much.

Thank you to Bernie, for your inspiration and always interesting conversations.

Thank you to Lisa, my best friend, who has always been there for me, and is probably my biggest fan who isn’t required to be by relation. I appreciate all that you are.

Thank you to George and Susan, the family I always felt part of, even if I wasn’t.

Thank you to you, the reader, who continues to read despite my less-than-routine posting schedule and my tardiness in responding to comments. I appreciate you all more than I can ever say. If you didn’t read, I would not write here. It’s that simple.

Thank you to the people who comment. I read them all and am making an effort to make time to respond more quickly.

Thank you to those who email. I always respond to email, faster than comments, sometimes. If you’ve taken the time to write me but haven’t hard back, try again. My spam filter is the devil.

Thank you to my partner, Sean Platt, a true friend and genius, for pushing me when I need to be pushed to take risks I’d never take on my own. I look forward to the worlds we will continue to build – real and fictional. And thank you to his his wife, Cindy, one of the most caring and supportive people I’ve ever known.

Thank you to Lori Taylor, for your faith, your humor, your creative genius, your dedication, and loyalty. You are easily one of the most fascinating people I’ve ever met.

Thank you to Michelle and her husband Scott, for your kindness and ability to turn chaos into order.

Thank you to Tracy O’Connor for your awesome sense of humor and horrible taste in music :)

Thank you to Dave Fowler the most genuine and funniest guy I know.

Thank you to Danny Cooper for your mad skills, insights, and ideas.

Thank you to Eric Hamm for creating the awesome Frugal theme and for always having time for my dumb questions.

Thank you to Susan Greene, for your emails and advice.

Thank you to all the clients who have trusted us to help them build their business and dreams.

Thank you to those of you who have suffered to read this far on a completely self-serving post! I’ll get back to funny stuff next time!

And lastly, thank you my father, for being the most important person in my life, in ways which I am still discovering.

I was invited to write a guest post about the thing I am most thankful for at Man of The House. Here’s a preview, with a link to the full article below.

Thanks Dad – Heroes

When I was a child, my dad was an infallible superhero. He meant the world to me and I wanted to be just like him. My view changed as I got older, blaming my dad for a lot of things. What I later realized was I had failed to see what he was doing for us. The opportunities he was giving our family. He knew how to be a good father — a father who leads not by words, but by example.

    Hey David,

Thank you for the mention. Was so surprised to be reading along and see my name! And thank you for all the times you’ve made me laugh out loud with your witty, sarcastic posts. I read every one, even if I often don’t make the effort to comment.

Know that I continue to be yours and Sean’s biggest fans, quietly cheering every time I hear of the Dynamic Duo’s successes. The two of you are awesome stand-outs in the crowded blog world.

  6. Thank you so much Dave, I did read this on Thanksgiving but didn’t comment then because of something involving turkey grease.

I am very glad that we met and that every day I live is another opportunity to expand your taste in music.

Where am I in that list of people you are thankful for?? I shared a womb with your wife and I don’t even get a name listed? I helped her become the other twin! You should be thanking me that you married the one twin and not the Heather twin! ROFL:)
