Is there anything you’d like to change in your life?

As January approaches, people begin cementing their New Year’s Resolutions. Millions of people will promise to stop smoking, stop eating too much, and finally make use of that exercise machine/clothes hanger they spent way too much money on.

In other words, lots of people are gonna lie to themselves.

Because most people don’t change.

I know. I’ve tried. And given up. More times than I can count. Most years, I’ve not even bothered with the pretense of resolutions.

Change is hard. If it were easy, people wouldn’t make such a big deal about it. They wouldn’t beat themselves up when they failed to change. They wouldn’t spend lots of money looking for EASIER ways to change. They’d just, as the Nike commercial once said, Just Do It.

But we don’t.

A few years ago I tried to lose 100 pounds as part of this one-year column I wrote for the newspaper I worked at. I failed miserably. While there were many reasons I failed, most of which had to do with the fact that cookies-n-cream ice cream is my heroin. But there was also the fact of how long my goal was.

A year to lose weight seems like a long time. It’s easy to tell yourself that you’ll work harder, eat better, not pig out tomorrow when there are months left in your goal.

But what if the goal were shorter?

It’s a lot easier (for me, anyway) to keep focus when my focus is narrowed to the near future.

Some of you may have noticed my lack of timely updates for the past several months. Part of the reason is that I’ve been busy. Busy all year, really.

But I’ve also been depressed.

Depression is actually part of the reason that I pulled the plug on BlogToFit. The more I wrote at the site, the more aware I became that I needed to make more changes in my life than just weight. I was miserable and it’s hard to write inspiring things when you’re miserable and not living authentically.

I didn’t want to talk about this on the blog because, in part, I wasn’t ready to address all that needed addressing.

While I’ve written about personal things on this blog before, I’ve always kept you at somewhat of a distance.

It’s always been easier that way.

But now, it’s time to really put myself out there. Step out of the comfort zone of being somewhat anonymous and hidden behind whatever persona I’ve created here.

On January 3, 2011, I’m kicking off a new website and project called Project 30 Days.

The idea is to take 12 things I don’t like about myself and change them, one month at a time. For the most part, I think these are things which a lot of people would like to change or are habits they’d like to adopt, themselves.

I’ll write about the changes as they take place, share my plans and efforts with you. I’ll also be interviewing people who are already succeeding at the things I’m trying to do, featuring some guest posts, and posting videos from time to time.

I thought about doing the posts here – but this isn’t the place to hit you over the head with my attempts at self-improvement. While I’ll be writing in the same style I write this site, I know the subject matter isn’t for everyone – I get it. I soooo get it. So, I’m starting up a new blog.

While Project 30 Days officially kicks off next Monday, I’m posting there all this week, with some background info and behind-the-scenes thoughts on the site as I build it.

I’d love for you to come check it out and maybe even join me on my journey.

What would you like to change in your life this year?

You wouldn’t know it by coming here, but I’ve actually been writing a lot lately. I’m finishing up a book, have been ghostwriting for clients, and I’m preparing a new blog which I’m going to launch in January. I’ve also been writing guest posts elsewhere.

I almost never write guest posts, and yet somehow, I’ve got three in one week. So please, check them out. I’ll be back here Wednesday with a proper post.

First, is a guest post at FatWallet.com, a site which posts all sorts of great deals online. Just last week, they posted a deal on Wired Magazine – up to 3 years for something like $3 a year. I LOVE Wired Magazine, but I was too late to the deal and missed out. But, anyway, that’s the kind of great stuff you can find there. So, they asked if I’d write something for the holiday season. I suggested a humorous Black Friday Survival Guide, complete with illustrations.

Next up, Man of The House recently asked me to do some regular guest spots at their site, a magazine for today’s man. They have all sorts of useful articles explaining how to fix things, how to groom, and advice on parenting. Useful topics written by experts … and yet they still wanted me to write for them! Apparently they didn’t read too far into the archives here, or they’d see that I can’t cook, fix things, or build worth a damn. But I said I’d be happy to write about things I DO know about – up first, a post on vulgarity – or in their words, how to discipline children for dirty words.

Lastly, the self-improvement site, PickTheBrain (which I re-designed last month, by the way), invited me to write some guest posts. The first one is about how to lose that lethargic feeling once and for all.

As always, thank you for reading.

Wow, hard to believe I’ve been doing this blog for two years.

A lot has changed in the course of two years. From the growth of my son, who was just one then, to the growth of this blog, which had one reader (I can count myself, right?) then, change is the only constant. And, as the site turns two, I figured it was time for another redesign.

The drawing which starts this post was part of the original redesign concept I had, but I scrapped it for what you see now. Shame to let good art go to waste, though.

Part of the reason for the redesign was aesthetics – I like a pretty blog. But I also wanted to add some functionality to the site, something to draw new (and new-ish readers) to some of the older content they may have missed. I am going through the process of re-categorizing a lot of posts (I’m about 70% done) so you will be able to find posts of a similar theme to the one you’re reading. For example, if you like a rant I wrote, you might want to go back and JUST read my rants. Well, now you can. Just below each post title (headline) you’ll see a blue link telling you what category you’re reading. Click on that and you will be taken to archived posts of just those kinds of posts.

I also added some of the main categories in boxes up top, to the right of the logo.

Man v. Wife – which covers differences between men and women, mostly dealing with my wife and the weird things she does that make no sense to me (like putting peanut butter and jelly on the SAME side of the sandwich).

Ruining Children’s Literature - While I only have a couple of posts with Rejected Kids’ Books, they are fun, and definitely something I’d like first-time visitors to see right away. And I’m sure I’ll be doing a new round of rejected book covers soon.

Rants – There’s a lot of stupid people out there. I plan to post a rant about each of them before this blog is done.

Memorable Moments – Pretty self explanatory. These posts mostly deal with my son, E, and the cute, funny, or just special moments I want to remember as he grows.

Heartfelt – These posts are the ones from the heart. Sometimes, they’re about just saying thank you, and other times, they’re about the death of a best friend.

You can also see other categories in a drop-down box in the sidebar to your right.

Another new thing about my site, you might notice, is that I changed WordPress themes. I was using Chris Pearson’s Thesis theme. Now I’m using Eric Hamm’s Frugal theme. While I still like Thesis, and it was the first WordPress premium theme I had any experience with, Frugal has become one of my main tools in customizing site designs for clients. The fact is, I don’t think there’s an easier-to-use theme for customizing a blog! I did this site without ever leaving the dashboard of WordPress. No tricky css code or changing code of theme files at all. When it came time to redesign Blogger Dad, there was no question which theme I’d use this time around.

I’ll probably be making some more tweaks to the site over the next week or so. Feel free to let me know if there’s anything you don’t like or would like to see, and I’ll see what I can do. Because while this site is about me and my family, it’s FOR you. You are the reason I’m still here posting two years later.

Thank You…

Thank you to everyone who stops by to read. Thank you to those who take the time to comment (even though I am the worst jerk in the world about returning comments – because I work 900 hours a week).

Thank you to my wife, BloggerMom, who has made this blog possible by being an awesome wife, a great mother, and giving me lots of material and not getting (too) mad when I make fun of her penchant for buying bad can openers. I love you.

Thank you to my mom, dad, and brother, who have helped make me into the wonderfully (?) weird person I am today and inspire me daily.

Thank you to my extended family, those that read and sometimes even comment.

Thank you to my business and creative partner Sean Platt and his wonderful family, who have shared the blogging journey with me and have helped to pave a road which seems to be getting more amazing every day.

Thank you to Lori and the team at REV who absolutely kick ass!

Thank you to my friend, Lisa, who is probably my only real-life friend who reads this thing. Which is good, because it lets me make fun of my other “friends” without worry.

And lastly, thank you to E, my son, without whom, this site would’ve just devolved into daily rants about things which tick me off. Thank you, E, for showing me the what’s really important and that the world is still wonderful, if you take the time to look through different eyes.

Thank you to everyone.

Want BloggerDad delivered to your email every time I post?

I no longer blog for the same reasons I started blogging.

I started Blogger Dad, in part, to keep my writing fresh and chronicle the adventures of being a first-time father. I also had the idea that someday a newspaper or magazine would see my brilliance and hire me to do a regular parenting column – even if I never actually pursued said column. In short, I was dreaming small.

I was looking to replace the job I had – as a writer – with another writing job. But as is my destiny, whenever I pursue one kind of job, a different one presents itself. I’ve been doing web design, illustration, and writing lately. I’m also asked to consult, using my experience to help others. I’m utilizing a lot of different skill sets, which is opening doors which probably wouldn’t be open to me as a columnist. So while I started this blog in hopes of a regular column, I’m not looking for that now – which is liberating in a way.

For the past few months, I’ve been so busy I’ve hardly had time to do regular blog posts. But the reality is that I didn’t have the time to do the kind of blog posts I was doing here at BloggerDad. I spent a lot of time on posts in the past, carefully crafting them as I would a column, writing and re-writing until I was happy – or somewhat happy with the result. Since I’ve not had time to do that kind of post, I’ve pretty much stopped posting as frequently.

Then I realized I’m no longer bound by my original goals.

Since I’m no longer looking for that kind of job, I can now write more freely. This means smaller posts, video posts, a bit less time editing, and perhaps even different topics. I won’t stress out because I don’t have a few hours to write the perfect post. I’m just going to be me, unedited, experimental, and perhaps, even more authentic without the filter I was working through.

So, here’s the schedule I intend to (more or less) stick to (who’s got money on less?):

Monday - The regular post, whether it be something from the heart, poking fun at children’s literature, or ranting about why men are better shoppers.

Tuesday - A product review or a Cooking With Blogger Dad post.

Wednesday – Ask Blogger Dad. The feature I started over at DadOMatic finds a new home right here. Got some questions that only an incredibly awesome and super intelligent guy can answer? Well, ask that guy. But if you want useless knowledge and snarky responses, then I’m your guy!

Thursday – Grab bag. Either a regular post, a video post (yes, I’ve discovered video and might even feature myself if Tara pays me enough does the same), a cute pic of E, or something.

Friday – Wrapup: A look back at the week, some of the better (or worse) reader comments, links to some cool stuff on the web, and whatever shenanigans I get up to on Twitter.

In short, I won’t apologize for not being around of late. I hate apology posts. People have lives, they work; I’m sure you get it. However, without the stress of writing the perfect post, I can bring some fun back to Blogger Dad and be more present here. So, thank you to all who have stuck around and keep commenting – I appreciate the support and look forward to the coming months. As always, thank you for reading.

Question: Why did you start blogging? Why are you blogging now?

Want BloggerDad delivered to your email every time I post?

Some of you may have noticed the dwindling blog posts during the last few weeks.

While I said I’m busy, that’s only partially true. I’ve also been wrestling with a difficult decision to come clean with you, the reader.

While you have gotten to know me (and my writing partner Sean Platt of Writer Dad) as fathers and writers over the past year and a half, we haven’t been exactly honest.

Remember how last year Men With Pens came out and admitted that neither of them were in fact men (and oddly, neither used pens, but rather pencils)?

That was nothing.

This confession is far more shocking.

And a bit more painful because someone has basically forced us to come out and admit whom we really are. It’s a long story and not worth going into other than to say, we are setting the matter straight on our terms, not anybody else’s.

While it will come as a shocker, some of you have stumbled on the truth, even if you didn‘t know it. Deep Friar and others on Twitter have joked that Sean and I are actually the same person.

Well, congratulations. You were right.

Sean Platt and David Wright are, in fact, one person.

And neither of us is really a father.

Actually, we’re a mother.

Go ahead – soak it in.

Our, or rather, my real name is Jessica McCormack. I am a mother of not one, but three children. Yes, Writer Dad and Blogger Dad are actually Writer Mom and Blogger Mom.

You knew we were just a bit too sensitive to be men, right?

But that’s not all.

Here’s the part which will come as a surprise to the person who has threatened to out “us.”

My name isn’t REALLY Jessica.

In fact, I’m not even an American.

I’m an alien.

No, not a filthy Canadian like Friar, but rather a REAL alien. As in from outer space.

My real name is Yutvifhtxzz (or as close as your language can pronounce it) and I come from another planet just outside your solar system. The planet is called xj87d, and exists in the solar system you have named Epsilon Eridani, which is roughly 10.5 light years from your sun.

I came here to live among you humans in hopes of understanding you.

In the past 2 years, I’ve tried to figure out why:

People stop in doorways as they exit stores to look at their receipts in total disregard for the people behind them?

Every comment section on every website with either news or videos devolves into either a racist or a disturbing conversation?

Why MTV is called Music Television?

Why humans will return to the fridge and open the door over and over when they are hungry, as if they expect new food to appear magically?

Why every mattress dealership this side of Alpha Centauri always has large signs advertising a giant price reduction?

I didn’t say I was here for anything important, and I’m still no closer to understanding people than I was two years ago.

Now that the secret’s out, I suppose you’ll go off and read some human’s blog. Thanks for getting to know us, er, I mean me.

It’s been fun.

One last thing. Since we’re in the spirit of confession, I figured you should see a photograph of the real me, not the Hollywood actors and drawings I’ve employed for the past two years.

I must warn you, though.

My species is repugnant to look at.

Hideous monsters that will frighten all but the most jaded observer.

If you have children, you should probably have them leave the room.

No, really. Shield them from the ugliness that is our species!

We’re

VERY

VERY

VERY

VERY

UGLY!

You have been warned.

Yay! Things My Child Says is live!

If you are looking for funny, sweet, and amusing children’s quotes, then you must check it out. Whether you’re a mommy blogger, daddy blogger or simply someone who enjoys the amusing things that children say, Things My Child Says will have something for you.

For this project, I customized Eric Hamm’s wonderful WordPress Frugal theme. As you might recall, if you read the post on the design process, I had a green site design last week. Well, the final result is waaaaay different.

Started out like this (click to make bigger):

Added some new custom art and a complete change in color and came up with this.

A lot more playful.

I even have one of the kids hanging upside down, from the top of the browser – which is a pretty cool look, to me. I carried the design over to the Twitter background, also. This is one of my favorite Twitter backgrounds, yet.

So, enough background on Things My Child Says. Please, go check it out and help me get it off the ground properly. The more people who visit the site and submit, the better the site will be!

As I mentioned yesterday, I’m developing a new site devoted to things that children say. Thank you to all the readers and bloggers who have commented and sent me quotes. There are some great ones in the mix and I can already tell that this site is going to be lots of fun.

Seeing as the new site launch is still 6 days away, I figured I’d give you a sneak peek at the art for the site and talk a bit about what goes into my site design process, for those who are interested in the behind-the-scenes of it all.

Who is the site for?

Whenever I approach a new site design, whether it be mine or a client’s, I try to get a feel for both what the site is offering and who the ideal site viewers are.

For this site, geared mostly towards parents, I want the site to be fun and whimsical. I drew a few mockup headers and some art. To be honest, I don’t like what I initially came up with. Sometimes a design is an instant hit. Other times, it takes a while to figure out exactly what I want to do with it.

Usually, I don’t share my test sites while in progress, but I figure some of you might be interested in the early stages of the process.

Color

A website’s color immediately sets the mood of the visitor. One might argue that it’s the single most important thing in forming first impressions with new readers.

Clean, dark, bold and flashy, earth tones, pastels, soft colors – all of these choices say something different about a website and your brand. It’s not about picking what your favorite color is, but rather the color which presents the message you are trying to convey. Check out this video for some more details on color and branding.

However, don’t be afraid to experiment with web design colors. After all, how boring would it be if all sites of a specific topic looked the same?

There are tons of good websites out there devoted to color. Here is one of my favorites color scheme generators. You plug in a color’s RGB code and it whips up a few different schemes. Sometimes they look nice. Other times, not so much. More often than not, I use it as a reference, but use my own judgment to determine the final colors.

I played with a few different color schemes and am trying to pick between green, blue or just plain white.

My first design (still in progress) is a bit on the green side. Literally and figuratively. Click on the image below.

The header is not what I originally came up, but it’s not bad. I’ve got playful lettering and some swirly tree lines and a nice word balloon. All in all, it looks okay. Maybe even good. However, the more I thought about it, it’s not perfect for what I want.

Going with your strengths

For all my site design work, it only now occurs to me that I don’t often use my biggest asset, what makes me unique from some of the other designers out there, the fact that I’m a cartoonist.

For my children’s quotes design, I need to add some of my personal flair. So I am changing the header, and likely a bit more of the site design, before it launches next Monday.

Here is the first illustration which I will be utilizing in the new header. I’d like to tell you how it will be used, but I’m more interested in making it a surprise.

Thanks for reading my little behind-the-design-process post. I’m really looking forward to this site launch. I think it’s going to be lots of fun. I’ll post a bit more each day this week, leading up to the site launch on Monday! Remember, I’m looking for some more quotes, so email them to me (see this post for details).

If you have any comments or questions regarding either the design or the site in general, feel free to post a comment or email me.

As always, thank you for reading,

We started by dutifully keeping track the first time he said words.

Pretty soon, we were detailing entire phrases. Now that he’s a chatty (and boy, is he chatty!) toddler, it seems that not a day goes by that he doesn’t say something which either makes us laugh, go “awww” or… sometimes, just cringe. (note to self: Family Guy is not meant for two year olds).

I grabbed a note pad one day to write down something he said and a light bulb went off.

Why not start a website to both record and share some of the things he says? Yeah, it might be the sort of thing that has minimal appeal to mostly just parents and maybe even just my parents, but why not give it a shot?

I was halfway into designing the site when another thought followed.

Why just limit the site to what my son says?

I bet a lot of parents, grandparents, teachers, and babysitters would like to send in things the kids in their lives say too! Together, we can probably build quite a fun little site.

That’s where you come in.

Does your child say funny, interesting, sweet or just plain silly things that you’d like to see featured?

All you need to do is send the quote, your name and your child’s name (you can use abbreviations or nicknames) and age. If you have a blog, include the link and as long as its not some spammy blog or website, I’ll link back to you in the post.

If you’d like, you can also send along a photo of your child to include in the post.

Submissions should be something like this:

Your relation to the child

Your child’s name (or nickname) and age

Your name. If you prefer to remain anonymous, let us know.

Your blog or website if you have one

Setup (if there is one)

The quote

Include a photo if you’d like to see it included. If you have a photo related to the quote, all the better.

Example:

Relation: My son

Name: E

Age: 2.5

My Name: David Wright

blog: www.bloggerdad.com

setup: We were at a restaurant recently, when my wife was asking E what the name of the place was called. He said the name and then, as the waitress was walking nearby said the following:

Quote: “This place is crap.”

It’s that easy!

Send your quote(s) to us at thingsmychildsays (at) gmail.com Please put ‘quote’ in your title.

Note: By submitting an entry, you grant Things My Child Says the right to publish your child’s quote on the website and possibly in other forms, such as a book or e-book in the future. Your child will be credited in whatever format we publish in. We will not use photos anywhere other than the website without your permission, though.

The site will launch next Monday (Jan. 25). I can’t wait to see what you send in.

Like this post? Please consider tweeting it and telling others about it.

Maybe I’m just cynical, but when I get a list like this, I read it as, 93 Blogs That Are Better Than Yours.

According to the site, blog rankings were determined by things such as Google page rank, backlinks, site traffic and authority.

And while there certainly are some, okay, a lot of, winners on the list who rightfully belong above me (including some good friends of mine), there’s also a few whose inclusion leaves me scratching my head. For instance, Number 30 - Dictionary for Dads, while a great resource for dads, is NOT A BLOG. It’s a web site of useful information, but not in any way, shape or form, a blog!

Number Two, Dad’s Divorce is, I suppose a blog, in that it has enabled comments (though there are none following posts). Well, many newspaper websites have enabled comments on their stories but that doesn’t make them blogs. Dad’s Divorce posts questions about divorce along with answers, provided by the law firm which runs the site. And while the site has an amazingly active forum, the content itself doesn’t really seem like a blog. On a side note, I find it interesting, and a bit telling, that the number two dad “blog” is one instructing fathers how to get away from their wives and/or children.

Another so-called “blog” on this list which doesn’t really belong is Number Six, The Dad Man. The website isn’t a blog, but rather a portal by author Joe Kelly, which leads to all his various places on the web, including his blogs – which are hosted elsewhere. While Joe is extremely successful and deserving of recognition, this site is NOT A BLOG.

Okay, now that we’ve weeded those three “blogs” out, that brings my ranking up to 91.

Still not good enough.

Come on; are these 91 blogs really better than mine? I mean, yeah, many of them are well written, contain useful information, have lots of backlinks, and have lively comment sections. But is that REALLY what makes a blog great?

I’ve given some thought into what makes a great blog and it isn’t necessarily Google rankings, which can be had by anybody with the right SEO combination and links. I think that the following qualities should be considered on any list which attempts to sort out the best of Dad Blogs. Yes, this list happens to skew towards things I happen to do well. That is purely coincidence, though.

Humor is a pretty important aspect of this blog. After all, the tagline is “a little humor, a lot of heart.” And while these other dads may be funny and also delve into poop stories, how many of them are willing to risk alienating 70% of their reader base with posts like my Best Post Ever or Men are Better Shoppers? Okay, some of the bloggers on this list also write funny and gutsy stuff. But I’d say the humor in my blog brings me into at least the Top 40 of the list. Right?

Heart: The other half of my personal equation is heart. How many other daddy bloggers show their sensitive sides like I did in these posts? Staring into the Future With Our Fingers Crossed and Unemployed at Labor Day. Okay, I’ll admit there are some pretty sensitive guys on this list, but still, my willingness to risk ridicule and get called a Nancy Boy by some of the more manly bloggers ought to at least push me into the Top 30 of this list. Right?

Design: What about things like design? Not to toot my own horn, but my blog (which I customized myself) EASILY ranks in the top 10 in appearances. Some of these blogs look like they were designed by blind monkeys. Long rambling chunks of text, no images, or worse, giant gaudy images – a lot of these sites could use a makeover. So, if we take design into account that easily brings me up to the Top 20. Right?

Comics: Now, what else is important in a site? If you said well-drawn comics, well, you’re not alone. And I don’t think any of these bloggers are also cartoonists, so, BOOM! that moves me up to the Top 10. Right?

Adorableness: Okay, now last but not least, is the category of adorable kids. People, well at least parents (most the rest of the world could care less), like to look at blogs with cute pictures of adorable kids, right? Well, you want cute pics, I’ve got cute pics!

While there are lots of bloggers on the list with cute photos of their adorable sons and daughters, if you take into account the above qualifications humor, heart, design, cartooning and adorable kids, well, come on, I’ve GOT to be Number One.

Right?

There, I just awarded myself number one. Take that, Geek Dad. You’re outta here!

On a serious note, thank you to Keith for including me in this list. I appreciate being part of such a great group of great blogging dads. For anyone looking for some daddy blogs to check out, you can’t go wrong with any of the ones on this list. Except maybe 94, that guy really sucks. And maybe Number 46, (according to certain female bloggers around these parts) he’s too damned good looking to be a real blogger. And that Number 25 guy, he’s got a huge nose and keeps sordid company.
