Fun With Twitter: Olympic Edition
I was watching the opening night of the Winter Olympics on Friday and was absolutely bored silly waiting for the torch lighting ceremony.
It wasn’t that the performances were bad individually, but there were just soooooooooooo many of them and they seemed to go on forever! It was as if Canada, in the spirit of inclusion, had to celebrate every single group in the country right down to model train hobbyists!
So I did what any bored blogger would do, I got on Twitter and posted a bunch of snarky comments and alienated my Canadian readers.
me (@bloggerdad): How long is this opening ceremony going to be? Holy crap, Canada!
TrinaMb @bloggerdad stay tuned Dave, more Canadian awesomeness to come.. #proud #CDN
MenwithPens @bloggerdad More? Did you say you want more? The speeches should take 40 hours. Sit tight.
me: @TrinaMb @MenwithPens It’s like they’re trying to cover every single aspect of Canada in one giant, insane spectacle, which is oddly lacking
TrinaMb @bloggerdad lighting of the cauldron certainly a highlight, no feelings of lack here
me: by the time they light the cauldron, the sun will be out.
me: MORE music?! You’ve got to be kidding.
me: @TrinaMb It feels like one of those big budget movies with lots of flash but little depth or feeling.
TrinaMb @bloggerdad well, it’s not coming across that way to us, the poetry and now KD lang, VERY moving
me: @TrinaMb the poet guy was good. K.D. was awesome. But the flying dude and the 40 different other numbers – a.bit.too.much.
AmySphere @bloggerdad at least it’s not celine dion, right?
me @AmySphere Shh, she’s probably next! Singing “My Heart Will Go On” in 14 different languages.
ChicoSousa we love music! RT @bloggerdad: MORE music?! You’ve got to be kidding.
me: Okay, this is going on way too long. This is Canada’s way of saying F-You to the world, isn’t it?
MenwithPens @bloggerdad You figured us out. Damn.
me: @MenwithPens I had always liked Canada. But now that I see the country’s true self.
PriG92 @bloggerdad LOL! Now we learn Canada can be angry too….
AmySphere @bloggerdad vomit.
DavinaH @bloggerdad They’re lucky @Deep_Friar isn’t there. He says if he got close enough to the torch he’d try to blow it out.
me: Oh, NOW I know why K.D. Lang was singing ‘Hallelujah’ – they’re finally about to light the damned torch!
me: ANOTHER SONG?!
MenwithPens @bloggerdad *blink*… Okay, just for that? More music for you, buddy.
me: @MenwithPens damn you, damn you all to hell!
MenwithPens @bloggerdad Mmhm. Whatcha got to say NOW, eh?? EH??!
me: @MenwithPens Wow. Just. Wow.
me: @MenwithPens Be glad Bush isn’t still prez. He woulda gotten bored and launched some nukes about an hour ago.
me: @MenwithPens Are all 30 million Canadians involved in this production?
MenwithPens @bloggerdad Well, they didn’t invite me, so maybe only 29 million. (I was busy anyways.)
me: @MenwithPens you’re one million people?!
MenwithPens @bloggerdad Yes. At least my ego thinks so.
me: @MenwithPens that’s rather male of you
MenwithPens @bloggerdad That’s what they say
TrinaMb @bloggerdad geez, stop being such a buzz kill, are you always this impatient?
me: @TrinaMb you’ve not read my blog, have you? Besides, this thing started at what? 2 p.m.? And hey, I gave a moment of silence.
ChicoSousa it is Canada’s turn. RT @bloggerdad: Okay, this is going on way too long. This is Canada’s way of saying F-You to the world, isn’t it?
me: @ChicoSousa Yeah, I guess, America’s been doing it for what? 40 years?
me: What? Now we’re taking oaths? Come on, already!
me: “I swear to tell the whole truth, and spend lots and lots of time on music and flying around.”
me: Sorry, China’s ceremony was so much better. http://tinyurl.com/5u8pke
TrinaMb @bloggerdad should’ve known better than to Q your patience, but the actual ceremony was 3hrs… no wonder your patience was tested
me: @TrinaMb China’s ceremony was 4 hours (according to the article I posted) but it felt like 2 hours. This one seemed like 7 hours.
me: great, the cauldron is stuck! arghhhh! Quick, someone get Celine Dion to sing something.
MenwithPens Well, there we go. That was awesome. I’m going to go crash n’ burn
me: @MenwithPens Wait a second – it’s not over! You have to stay till the bitter end! Wayne’s not done yet.
MenwithPens @bloggerdad I don’t think Wayne’s gonna sing, though.
me: Oh man, Joe Biden is talking now. Opening ceremony to extend 3 more hours.
mammaloves RT @bloggerdad: Oh man, Joe Biden is talking now. Opening ceremony to extend 3 more hours.//#americansyouhopemightbecanadian
EZF_MomBlogers RT @mammaloves: RT @bloggerdad: Oh man, Joe Biden is talking now. Opening ceremony to extend 3 more hours.//#americansyouhopemightbecanadian
Childcareisfun_ @bloggerdad @RedMummy @SnglMomSurvives woke up feeling rotten, bug still here, read your comments on the olympics and laughed! Thank Q xx
Deep_Friar @bloggerdad Olympic Ceremonies are just BEGGING to be made fun of…
Deep_Friar @bloggerdad God forbid in Canada should we EVER have an event that doesn’t involve maple leaves, fiddle Music and totem poles ….not to mention an artsy-farsty dance interpretion that is suspiciously like Cirque to Soleil.

Ha! That’s funny.
The Twitter banter is great, but I woke up to activity on the Penny site and wondered how that happened. Now I know! These Intranets are fast.
Sean Platt´s last blog ..You Are a Writer
Funny as ever Dave, I can take a jabbing. Putting aside how things ‘felt’ to you, I think you really got duped – where’d ya get the idea they started at 2? Maybe you were just bored to begin with
You must have gone through hours of entertaining pre-ceremony banter.
