Overcoming Writer’s Block

by Blogger Dad on November 21, 2009

I’ve never really had a tough case of writer’s block before. I’ve never had a shortage of things to write about. I’m currently co-writing a genre bending vampire novel, Available Darkness, ghostwriting a few projects with my creative partner, Sean Platt, and doing art for his upcoming children’s book, Penny to a Million. So, the creative juices are always flowing. However, during the past few weeks, I’ve not known what to write about here, at Blogger Dad.

Ironic that I wrote an article at Collective Inkwell, How to Never Run Out of Ideas.

Part of the block might be because I’ve been so busy with other projects and the daily routine. Part of it was something more. I visited my site, looked at the home page and felt it’s glare, taunting me for my lack of ideas. And that’s when I realized — I was feeling lost at my own site.

Being lost, I needed to find myself.

So, I did what any first time visitor to a site might do. I went to my About page and read what I wrote more than a year ago — my original goals and ideas for the site. And suddenly, I’d found myself and remembered what I want from this site.

  • musings on parenthood, blogging and life
  • embarrassing anecdotes which will cause my wife to ask, are you really going to write that?
  • thoughts on writing
  • parenting wisdom (if I actually learn anything, that is)
  • product reviews of things my little guy likes, and the things which you shouldn’t waste money on
  • interviews with other blogger dads (and moms!)
  • pictures of the Cutest Toddler in the World
  • links to cool stuff on the web

So, in the next few weeks, you’ll notice a bit more focus on the above as I get back to basics and decide what works and what doesn’t.

New Thesis Design

In the spirit of finding my passion for the site, I also did a re-design of Blogger Dad to help reinvigorate it. The header is a bit larger than I normally do, but I like it. It has a retro feel and while it’s not as cute as the old design (click the image at left for a full-sized view) with my son, Mister Cupcake Face, it’s a good fit, I think.

For the technical stuff, I am still using the Thesis theme for Wordpress and found the newest Thesis update (1.6) makes site design even easier than it was before. If you want to put some new life into your own blog, I highly recommend it. And of course, if you want to hire me to design your Thesis or Frugal (another great option) themed site, I am available.

I look forward to announcing some new stuff at Blogger Dad and will do so on Tuesday.

As always, thank you for reading,

David

I like the redesign! I really need to get off my duff and start using something other than the WP themes…

I like it and of course the cutest toddler in the world has a certain draw to a mother of my age – which keeps me from harassing my kids as some of those low life crazy mothers are want to do.
I am going to be off computer for a few days, but I have been on computer for about 4 straight days so I think a break will be good. I really do need to rewrite my about page…I need refreshing too…
Thanks
