I never thought I would stand in line buying feminine pads for my son.

Yet, there I was at approximately 5:47 p.m. tonight. Buying pads for my 20-month old son.

You see, the good folks that make Diaper Doublers seem to have stopped making them.

For those that are asking what the hell a Diaper Doubler is, let me explain. It is essentially an absorbent pad which you place in a diaper to suck up urine. It, as I’ve read other mothers say, the best thing since sliced bread. Without Diaper Doublers, I would likely have to change my son’s diaper four times a night. He is, what is commonly known as in this house, a Super Soaker.

When my local store ran out of the item, and removed the space from their shelves, I nearly had a heart attack!

I spent today going from store to store to store searching for the Doublers. I even went to the crappy store on the other side of town which ALWAYS has discontinued items. They have cereal from back in the day when manufacturers put a pack of cigarettes inside them as the prize. Heck, the store still sells cans of New Coke in their vending machine. And yet THEY didn’t have the doublers!

So I came home and Googled the product and found to my horror -that the company has discontinued making them and replaced them with another item which:

you can only buy in bulk – at a rate of $44.95 for eight packs of 25 plus $10 shipping

did I mention $50 bucks?! The original diaper doublers retailed at $2.99 per pack of 30, far cheaper than this new alternative!

How can a company discontinue an item which is such a lifesaver?!

The worst part of all of this is that I have at many times considered buying the Diaper Doublers in bulk. I mean, I’m going to need them anyway, so why not? A few weeks ago, I saw that the store was a bit low – they had five packs left on the shelves. This was not uncommon, but I figured they would soon be restocked.

I considered buying them all so I didn’t get stuck in a jam. However, just as I was about to toss all the packs into my cart, I thought of some poor mommy who was in desperate need of the Doublers. I didn’t want to deny them to someone who really NEEDED THEM URGENTLY.

Once again, another cosmic lesson in not being considerate of others.

So I did a bit of research online and found a suggted Doubler substitute – to use a feminine pad inside the diaper. Which is how I wound up in line buying pads for my son.

Anybody have any suggestions a bit less shameful than pads?

*Two quick notes:

Check out my most recent BlogToFit post which talks a bit more about the store I visited.

As for the news which I teased last week, I’ll present that on Wednesday.
