Waiting For Poo

by Blogger Dad on November 13, 2009

I’m waiting for my son, E, to poop.

Until he has a solid movement, he can’t go back to daycare.

Which means he’s been home all week with me while I scramble to work late into the nights. I’m not sure which of us is more stir crazy, him being stuck inside or me, stuck watching mind numbing TV shows like Thomas the Train and Barney. At any rate, this might be the first time I’ve prayed for poop.

I’m not sure where he picked up whatever stomach bug he has, either the communicable disease factory known as daycare or perhaps from a certain fast food restaurant where he ate lunch at on Monday. If it IS the daycare, it would seem that someone sent their kid to school sick. Which means one of two things:

  1. Kids are getting sick and becoming contagious before their parents notice and can keep them home from daycare
  2. Parents don’t care about whether their kids spread their sickness to everyone else in the school so long as they are not personally inconvenienced

Given that E seems to catch something at the rate of once a week, I would suspect the latter. This, however, is the longest he’s been out from school. Even swine flu didn’t keep him out the whole week. So, I’m going to devote the next few months into finding, or perhaps creating a solution.

I call it the No Sick Bubble.

I better not see some company come and steal my idea. Unless, of course, you give me one for free.

It’s the second one.. A lot of parents just can’t sacrifice work for their kids health.

hi, Dave…you’ve probably tried everything, but my mom had all the old folk remedies and they seemed to work pretty well. first of all, brew fresh spearmint for a few minutes and serve the tea. this will stabilize his tummy and make him feel better. Then, to get rid of the hershey squirts, give him cooked rice and toast. This will solidify the yucky stuff (technical term). You should have some solid specimens reeel soon! good luck (or you can have a family sing-a-long of one of sean’s old favorites: dia-rreahhh (boom, boom), dia-rreahh (boom, boom)…when you’re riding in your chevy and your pants are feelin’ heavy, dia-rreahh!! (p.s. sweeten tea with honey , or he may not want to drink it)

Waiting For Poo sounds like heartwarming children’s book. Run with it.

Dave,

Every parent who’s had a child in daycare goes through exactly what you’re talking about — an endless series of colds, flues, stomach ailments, etc. Oh, and let’s not forget lice and scabies.

Hang in there; it does get better. Eventually your son will stop putting everything into his mouth, and he’ll develop a stronger immune system, so the sick days will be fewer. It does get easier.

I read last week that both the flu and stomach virus are most contagious before symptoms show themselves. Sucks doesn;t it. However, I know that some parents send sick kids to school. So it is both! Good luck waiting for #2.

Ew Susan – Scabies! I am praying we avoid that as I write this!

At our house I was the culprit. I brought a stomach virus home from Scotland with me. Then my son got sick. Then my wife got sick. Now half the people we know are sick. Someone should have put me in one of those bubbles.

Thank you for the comments. I’m glad to report that E got better shortly after this post and so far, he’s pooping like normal. Never thought I’d be happy to see poop!

Eric – Yeah, I kinda figured.

Margaret – Hey, welcome! Nice to see you here. Thanks for the tips. He got better shortly after I posted this. Will keep the tips in mind.

David – I’ve got two publishing companies in a bidding war.

Susan – Thank you. Given my aversion to all things insect-like, I am not at all looking forward to lice and scabies.

Surfer Jay – Prune juice? Won’t that make it worse??

Brittany – Great, so there really IS no way to keep my kid free of sickness, outside of the bubble, anyway.

Kool Aid – As soon as I get one, you’re on the list!

Otter – Well, that’s one way to get your own space in your house. “I’m contagious, off to my dad media room/office/game room!”
